Biographies

BILL KING, owner, has been a professional clarinetist for over 30 years. He currently holds the tenured 2nd/bass clarinet chair in the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra, Detroit's opera company based in the beautifully restored Detroit Opera House; he won the chair in 2005. He has also held tenured chairs in the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Orchestra (Principal), the Illinois Symphony (2nd), and Sinfonia da Camera (2nd). He has been first-call substitute with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, including regional touring, the Colorado Symphony, and the Phoenix Symphony. He performs regularly with the River Rasin Ragtime Revue, an ensemble dedicated to recreating the original popular music of the United States, and is the Coordinator of Woodwind Chamber Music at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. Each summer he performs at the Michigan City (IN) Chamber Music Festival, and free-lances throughout southeast Michigan, western Ontario, and northern Ohio. In addition he maintains an active studio of high school and junior high school clarinet students.

DANIEL GILBERT joined the faculty at the University of Michigan as Associate Professor of Clarinet in 2007. Previously, he held the position of Second Clarinet in the Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 2007. He teaches at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and he also served as the Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music from 2000 to 2001. A native of New York City, Mr. Gilbert received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and both a Master of Music degree and a Professional Studies certificate from The Juilliard School. Before joining the Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Gilbert was active as a freelancer in New York, appearing regularly with groups including: The Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater, New Jersey Symphony, Solisti New York, the Stamford Symphony and the New Haven Symphony, where he played principal clarinet from 1992 to 1995. Mr. Gilbert was a member of the Quintet of the Americas in 1994-1995. The group toured throughout the United States and was in residence at Northwestern University. He has appeared as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Heights Chamber Orchestra, the Suburban Symphony Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony, Solisti New York and the Aspen Mozart Orchestra. He is an active chamber musician, playing regularly on the Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Series, the Cleveland Museum of Art Chamber Series and the Oberlin Chamber Music series. Mr. Gilbert's master classes and recitals have received critical acclaim throughout the world. His teachers have included David Weber, Robert Marcellus, Stanley Hasty, Richard Waller, Burt Hara and Judith Kalin-Freeman.

CHAD BURROW has performed to critical acclaim from Europe, the Americas and Asia. His performances have been described by critics as "beyond reproach," and …[played] with a full, liquid tone." Rick Rogers of the Daily Oklahoman stated that a recent performance was "…always governed by an overriding musicality." The Thistead Dagbald described a recent performance of Kachaturian and Bartok as played with a, "brilliant technique and tonal beauty mixed with an expressive ferocity."

Burrow is associate professor of clarinet at Oklahoma City University and the principal clarinetist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. He is the past principal clarinetist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Burrow is the artistic director of the BrightMusic Chamber Ensemble along with his wife, pianist Amy Cheng. The Ensemble performs several concerts in and around Oklahoma City each year. 

Burrow has been honored at solo and chamber music competitions around the country including top prizes in the 2001 Young Concert Artist Auditions in New York, 2000 Woolsey Hall Competition, 2000 Artist International Competition, and 1997 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In addition, Burrow was the only American clarinetist invited to participate in the 2003 Munich Competition, in Germany. He has appeared as a soloist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, Taichung Philharmonic Orchestra, Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra, Shin Sharn Chamber Ensemble, Ft. Smith Symphony Orchestra, Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, Yale Philharmonia Orchestra, UCO Chamber Orchestra, Oklahoma City University Wind Philharmonic, Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, Oklahoma Youth Symphony and the Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire includes concerti of Copland, Crusell, Debussy, Francaix, Hartmann, Mozart, Nielsen, Rossini, Spohr, Stamitz, Weber, and others.

Burrow has presented recent recitals in Boston, Chicago, Oklahoma City, Tulsa (OK), New York, New Haven (CT), Providence (RI), Rochester (NY), Salt Lake City, South Bend (IN), and San Francisco. Some international recitals have included chamber music concerts across Northern Germany (1999) and yearly tours of Taiwan, beginning in 2001, which have included performances in Taichung and the national concert hall in Taipei. Burrow has played concert venues ranging from Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, Chicago's Symphony Center, the Music Mansion in Providence (RI), the Thy Chamber Music Festival (DK), the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Schleswigg-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany. Burrow has also been invited to give masterclasses and lectures in a number of schools including the San Francisco School of the Arts, Northwestern College (IA), Taichung Teachers University, and the Taipei University of the Arts and others.

Burrow frequently collaborates with his wife, the pianist Amy I-Lin Cheng. The duo has appeared in the 8th, 9th and 10th Amadeus Piano Festivals in Tulsa, in Munich, Germany, Taiwan, 2007 University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, 2007 International Clarinet Association Conference (Vancouver, Canada), the 2004 Society of Composers, Inc. National Conference and given duo recitals across the US. Recent concerts of the duo include appearances on Brightmusic Chamber Music Series in Oklahoma City, the Central Oklahoma Teachers Association Annual Recital, The Chopin Society of Mid America Concert Series, the Civic Music Association of Oklahoma City Concert Series, the Stonington Opera House Summer Concert Series(ME), and in recital at Northwestern College (IA), Stephen F. Austin State University (TX), University of Utah, University of Maine in Orno and Taipei University of the Arts. The duo made its debut CD recording appearance on "Chamber Music of Edward Knight" on Albany Records, released in 2005.

Other recent performances have included performances with pianists Tanya Bannister, Daniel Blumenthal, and Peter Miyamoto, as well as cellists Sophie Shao and Morton Zeuten, flutist Christina Jennings, violists Antoine Tamestit, Paul Neubauer and Matthew Dane and the Van Dingstee String Quartet.

Burrow holds a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), where he studied with Russell Dagon, and a Master of Music degree from Yale University, where he studied with David Shifrin.

CAROLINE HARTIG acclaimed clarinet soloist and recording artist, has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia and has appeared as soloist with orchestras and contemporary-music ensembles in major concert halls in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall (where she made her solo debut), Merkin Concert Hall, and the Fritz Reiner Center for Contemporary Music and Symphony Hall (Boston). She has also performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Boston Philharmonic and New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra. Hartig earned degrees from New England Conservatory, (MM), The Ohio State University (BME) and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, (DMA). Major teachers and career mentors have included the legendary Harold Wright, Robert Marcellus, Charles Neidich, Michele Zukovsky, George Silfies, David Hite, renowned pianist Artur Balsam,violinist Roman Totenberg, and flutist Sam Baron. In addition to an active solo and recording career, Hartig is demand as a master teacher and clinician and has served as a juror for numerous performance competitions including the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition and has been a guest clinician at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference. She is an artist/faculty for the Vianden International Music Festival, Luxembourg and a faculty leader for clarinet master classes at the Centro Studi Carlo della Giacoma in Todi, Italy. Hartig is currently Professor of Clarinet at Michigan State University. A Buffet Crampon artist and clinician, Hartig performs on the Buffet Festival clarinet.

JONATHAN GUNN, currently the Acting Principal Clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, was appointed by Maestro Paavo Järvi to the position of Associate Principal and Eb Clarinet. Previously Mr. Gunn was the Principal Clarinet of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic (IN) from 1998 to 2004. In addition to his tenured positions, Jonathan has also performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago, Pittsburgh and Colorado Symphony Orchestras. 

Mr. Gunn has participated in numerous music festivals including Bard, Sunflower, Tanglewood, Aspen, St. Bart's, Telluride Jazz Celebration, and Ashlawn-Highland Opera Company and, as a soloist, appeared with the Wheeling Symphony and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic on several occasions. As a chamber musician Jonathan is active around the United States as well as in the Cincinnati area, where he is a member of Concert:Nova and has performed regularly on the Linton Chamber Music Series, the CSO Chamber Players and Chamber Music at the Taft Museum. 

Committed to the education of the next generation of clarinetists, Mr. Gunn has maintained a private studio at his home and has given masterclasses around the country, including the Buffet-Crampon Summer Academy. Jonathan is on the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and shares in the duties of overseeing the clarinet department. He has also been on the faculty at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Goshen College, Andrews University and Seton Hill University.

Born in Sheffield, England, Mr. Gunn started his musical career playing violin and piano and began studying the clarinet after moving to the United States at age eleven. He received a Bachelor of Music from Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and a Master of Music from Duquesne University. Jonathan is married to Jennifer Gunn, who plays piccolo and flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Gunn is a Rico Artist, a Buffet-Crampon USA Performing Artist and plays exclusively on Buffet-Crampon clarinets.
