DANIEL GILBERT joined the faculty at the University of Michigan as Associate Professor of Clarinet in 2007. Previously, he held the position of Second Clarinet in the Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 2007. He teaches at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and he also served as the Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music from 2000 to 2001. A native of New York City, Mr. Gilbert received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and both a Master of Music degree and a Professional Studies certificate from The Juilliard School. Before joining the Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Gilbert was active as a freelancer in New York, appearing regularly with groups including: The Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater, New Jersey Symphony, Solisti New York, the Stamford Symphony and the New Haven Symphony, where he played principal clarinet from 1992 to 1995. Mr. Gilbert was a member of the Quintet of the Americas in 1994-1995. The group toured throughout the United States and was in residence at Northwestern University. He has appeared as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Heights Chamber Orchestra, the Suburban Symphony Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony, Solisti New York and the Aspen Mozart Orchestra. He is an active chamber musician, playing regularly on the Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Series, the Cleveland Museum of Art Chamber Series and the Oberlin Chamber Music series. Mr. Gilbert's master classes and recitals have received critical acclaim throughout the world. His teachers have included David Weber, Robert Marcellus, Stanley Hasty, Richard Waller, Burt Hara and Judith Kalin-Freeman.
CHAD BURROW has performed to critical acclaim from Europe, the Americas and Asia. His performances have been described by critics as "beyond reproach," and …[played] with a full, liquid tone." Rick Rogers of the Daily Oklahoman stated that a recent performance was "…always governed by an overriding musicality." The Thistead Dagbald described a recent performance of Kachaturian and Bartok as played with a, "brilliant technique and tonal beauty mixed with an expressive ferocity."
CAROLINE HARTIG acclaimed clarinet soloist and recording artist, has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia and has appeared as soloist with orchestras and contemporary-music ensembles in major concert halls in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall (where she made her solo debut), Merkin Concert Hall, and the Fritz Reiner Center for Contemporary Music and Symphony Hall (Boston). She has also performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Boston Philharmonic and New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra. Hartig earned degrees from New England Conservatory, (MM), The Ohio State University (BME) and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, (DMA). Major teachers and career mentors have included the legendary Harold Wright, Robert Marcellus, Charles Neidich, Michele Zukovsky, George Silfies, David Hite, renowned pianist Artur Balsam,violinist Roman Totenberg, and flutist Sam Baron. In addition to an active solo and recording career, Hartig is demand as a master teacher and clinician and has served as a juror for numerous performance competitions including the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition and has been a guest clinician at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference. She is an artist/faculty for the Vianden International Music Festival, Luxembourg and a faculty leader for clarinet master classes at the Centro Studi Carlo della Giacoma in Todi, Italy. Hartig is currently Professor of Clarinet at Michigan State University. A Buffet Crampon artist and clinician, Hartig performs on the Buffet Festival clarinet.
JONATHAN GUNN, currently the Acting Principal Clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, was appointed by Maestro Paavo Järvi to the position of Associate Principal and Eb Clarinet. Previously Mr. Gunn was the Principal Clarinet of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic (IN) from 1998 to 2004. In addition to his tenured positions, Jonathan has also performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago, Pittsburgh and Colorado Symphony Orchestras.
Mr. Gunn has participated in numerous music festivals including Bard, Sunflower, Tanglewood, Aspen, St. Bart's, Telluride Jazz Celebration, and Ashlawn-Highland Opera Company and, as a soloist, appeared with the Wheeling Symphony and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic on several occasions. As a chamber musician Jonathan is active around the United States as well as in the Cincinnati area, where he is a member of Concert:Nova and has performed regularly on the Linton Chamber Music Series, the CSO Chamber Players and Chamber Music at the Taft Museum.
Committed to the education of the next generation of clarinetists, Mr. Gunn has maintained a private studio at his home and has given masterclasses around the country, including the Buffet-Crampon Summer Academy. Jonathan is on the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and shares in the duties of overseeing the clarinet department. He has also been on the faculty at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Goshen College, Andrews University and Seton Hill University.
Born in Sheffield, England, Mr. Gunn started his musical career playing violin and piano and began studying the clarinet after moving to the United States at age eleven. He received a Bachelor of Music from Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and a Master of Music from Duquesne University. Jonathan is married to Jennifer Gunn, who plays piccolo and flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
